Case for Change
The objective of this project is to review the metalliferous mining training products in the RII training package. It responds to changing skill needs for metalliferous mining operators, managers and specialist technicians in resource processing, due to increased attention on tailings dam compliance and safety.
A Case for Change for this project was approved by the AISC in August 2019.
On behalf of the Mining, Drilling and Civil Construction (MDCI) IRCs, PwC’s Skills for Australia commenced industry consultations for this project in November 2019.
Consultation focused on how we can amend and create training products to better address industry’s needs in the planning and construction of dumps, ground control and dust management activities. It also focused on tailings dam safety and environmental compliance.
Outcomes from the consultation also endeavoured to respond to ongoing health and safety challenges and technological change affecting the industry and aimed to clarify and strengthen career progression pathways for metalliferous mining and extractive workers.

Training Product Development
Following the MDCI IRCs’ approval of our key findings from consultation, we developed draft training products to address the skills gaps identified for the industry.
The public review period for these draft training products is now closed.
The next step is to develop a Case for Endorsement for changes to the RII Training Package, which is to be provided to the MDCI IRCs for approval and submitted to the AISC later this year.
